Q: How come conversions sometimes differ by app or source?

A: Conversions can be imperfect. Many units--and thus their conversions--vary quite a bit. Variations can be due to rounding, anachronisms, discrepancies in measurement technique, and standards unique to a country or discipline. Take the “cup.” It varies by country. Even within the United States, it varies between US customary units (1 cup = 236.5882365 milliliters) and US food nutrition labeling (1 cup = 240 milliliters). Since Equals is a general purpose app intended for a U.S. audience, we have chosen to stick to the U.S. customary system as much as possible.
